Connecticut State Marshal Software

The desk that keeps your returns, money and clocks in order.

ReturnDesk runs the back office of a Connecticut State Marshal’s practice — trust-account reconciliation, statutory execution clocks, check capture and the forms — built to the State Marshal Manual, audit-ready by design.

The accountability

When the records aren't there, the badge comes off.

Connecticut built the State Marshal system in 2000, after abolishing its scandal-ridden county sheriffs — and tied the badge to one duty above all others: account for every dollar you collect.

The cautionary tale · Connecticut, 2021
Peter E. Karpovich — former Connecticut State Marshal

Collected client money and kept it. The Commission revoked his badge for failing to remit on time; the state then charged him with felony larceny.

What the law requires
Why ReturnDesk

The whole job — front to back.

Most tools handle the easy half. ReturnDesk runs the part the Commission actually audits: the money you hold and the clocks you can't miss.

Audit-ready trust accounting

A live receipts & disbursements journal, per-client ledgers and a three-way reconciliation that has to agree before you sign off. Your mid-February filing builds itself.

Never miss a statutory clock

Bank 7-day service and 45-day cycles, the 21st-day wage effective date, the 20-day property-sale notice — every execution becomes a deadline that surfaces before it's late.

AI check capture in seconds

Scan a check or remittance and the AI reads every field — maker, amount, date, account. You confirm, it posts to the right account and into the journal. No retyping, no transposed digits.

Built for Connecticut

The real forms, the real fee math (15% of judgment plus interest, the 15/115 split, the $50 minimum), the real statutes — not a generic CRM bent to fit.

Returns & fees, itemized right

Service, copies, endorsements, mileage — calculated to statute and itemized on the return, with the no-service refund rule and fee caps enforced so a fee is never questioned.

Your data, partitioned & private

Each Marshal’s files, trust account and executions are walled off from every other. Seven-year retention happens on its own. Nobody sees your book but you.

How it works

Up and running this week.

Step one

Import your open cases

Drop your active files into one spreadsheet — a row per case-account. ReturnDesk matches by file, person and docket and previews before anything saves.

Step two

Work the desk

Serve, document, advance executions — and let the AI read your checks. The clocks run themselves and money lands in the journal as you go.

Step three

Reconcile & file

Reconcile in three clicks, watch it tie and export the Commission filing. Attach the bank statement and you're done.

Questions

The things Marshals ask first.

Do I have to switch everything at once?+
No. Import your open cases and run ReturnDesk alongside your spreadsheet and checkbook for as long as you want. Most Marshals move over once they’ve watched the numbers tie a few times.
Can I import what I already have in a spreadsheet?+
Yes. Drop in a spreadsheet or CSV export — one row per case — and ReturnDesk matches by file, person and docket, then previews everything before it saves.
Is my client and debtor data private?+
Your book is encrypted and walled off from every other Marshal’s. We don’t sell data, and you can export yours at any time. The Security page has the details.
What if I’m not technical?+
If you can use email and a web browser, you can use ReturnDesk. The clocks, the fee math and the reconciliation run themselves, and we help you get set up.
Can my assistant and I share one login?+
Each Marshal gets their own login, one screen at a time, because every record is stamped to one Marshal’s name and commission number. If you genuinely need multiple screens, give us a call and we’ll discuss it in more detail.
What happens to my data if I cancel?+
All of your data is given back to you, and nothing is stored on our servers.
Is ReturnDesk approved by the State Marshal Commission?+
No software is “Commission-approved.” ReturnDesk is built to the 2025 State Marshal Manual and the statutes, so what you produce lines up with what the Commission audits — but it’s an independent tool, not legal advice.
How long does setup take?+
Most Marshals are running within a week — often the same day for a small book. Importing your open cases is the only real step.

The honest comparison

ReturnDesk vs. a spreadsheet and a checkbook.

The old way works — until the Commission, a client or an auditor asks you to prove it.
